The Lakeshore Movies (Film am See) at the Rote Fabrik are the pioneers of Zurich's meanwhile numerous open-air film screenings.
In the early summer of 1984, the Rote Fabrik film group came up with the idea of showing movies at the shores of Lake Zurich, and installed a film screen underneath the giant Sequoia trees at the Rote Fabrik.
Back then, promoting open-air screenings was no easy task, as open-air cinemas at that time still represented uncharted territory in Zurich. In the absence of a performance permit, advertising a movie proved to be challenging. Since it was prohibited to mention the film's original title in the advertisment, «The Last Tango in Paris» for instance had to be announced as as «Brando's last dance in the French capital.»
Meanwhile, the series Film am See are well established as one of the most prominent events of the Rote Fabrik. Every summer sees a fine cinematic outdoor program, rain or shine. In the event of nasty weather, the film screenings can be taken indoors, in one of the Rote Fabrik venues.
